This expert YouTube video by the folks at the very popular details magazine gives you three different ways to tie a scarf under various circumstances. The loose tie is for thin scarves with thin jackets, the slip knot is for thick scarves and thick jackets.

How to Tie Scarves

You may not think of it this way, but the way in which you tie your scarf can say a lot about you...or choke you. Here are just some ways that you can tie a scarf:

1)The Loop
Step One: Fold the scarf in half in order to make a loop.
Step Two: Hold the scarf in the middle as you put the scarf around the back of your neck.
Step Three: Insert the ends of the scarf into the loop.
Step Four: Pull on the ends to tighten the scarf to your liking.

2)The One Sided Knot
Step One: Put the scarf around the back of your neck and let it hang. Make sure the two sides are of equal length.
Step Two: Tie a knot in one of the sides.
Step Three: Insert the other end through the knot you just made.
Step Four: Pull on the end to tighten the scarf to your liking.

3) The Wrap
Step One: Let the scarf hang around your neck. Make sure the two sides are of equal length.
Step Two: Cross the two sides to make an X shape.
Step Three: Cross the two sides once again.
Step Four: Pull the ends towards your back through one another.
Step Five: Tie a knot in the back of your neck.

4)The Ascot
Step One: Let the scarf hang around your neck. Make sure the two sides are of equal length.
Step Two: Wrap one side around the other and form a knot shape.
Step Three: Let one side hang in the back and pull on the side you wrapped around the other to adjust for length.

There are plenty of other ways to tie scarves, most people just toss them over each side and just make sure that they protect the neck. The four mentioned here are the most popular ones.
